Western Albemarle had come close so often for the first 57 minutes of the game, but it suddenly found its best opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the Region 3C semifinal against Staunton. Connor Spano maintained possession on the right side of the offensive zone and passed to Jamey Williamson sprinting from the left. A defender came just short of cutting the pass off, then the goalie emerged toward Williamson.
Western Albemarle's Jamey Williamson celebrates the first of his two goals against Staunton in a Region 3C tournament semifinal game on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Western Albemarle High School in Crozet. Williamson remained composed and kept left past the diving keeper, then kicked it across the field and past the goal line for the lead. “The goalie came out, it went past him and shot it towards the goal, and it somehow went in,” Williamson said.
A little over 12 minutes later, Trip Janucik executed a deep pass from the right side and into the middle of the offensive zone, where Williamson was positioned with his back to the goal. He then hit a turnaround shot, which landed in the bottom right corner of the net for his second score. “Trip Janucik — he crosses the ball so many times, and when he played that, I kind of just decided to post up my defender, and try to spin to the outside,” Williamson said.
“Once I got that touch pass, I knew it was going in before I even hit it.” “[The shot had] silky touch,” Warriors head coach Michael Nafziger said..
