Preparations are underway and volunteers are needed to host a variety of running events during the 13th annual Monument Marathon in just a few months. This year’s marathon will be held on Sept. 28, and hundreds of participants are expected to travel to the Panhandle to run in what Western Nebraska Community College Foundation Director Jennifer Reisig called “Nebraska’s most beautiful race.

” During a Monday press conference, Reisig said that last year’s marathon raised over $47,000 to support student success at WNCC, resulting in a 13-year total of more than $555,000. Platte Valley Companies will serve as the event’s title sponsor for the 13th straight year. Hod Kosman, chairman, president and CEO of Platte Valley Companies, emphasized his enduring excitement for the marathon and the positive impact it has on the community.

“It’s a tremendous event, and it’s lots and lots of work,” Kosman said. “But it’s certainly worth it. We’re very pleased that we can add value back into our community to make it a greater success.

” Reisig said that the changes made last year to the marathon course were well received by runners, and that no more changes are expected for the next 10 years. She went on to discuss the purpose of the Monument Marathon, which is focused on local tourism, promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting the students of WNCC. WNCC President Greg Dart recalled his first exposure to the Monument Marathon last year, and expressed his enthusiasm .
