Intertwining culture and knowledge while sharing the core essence of safeguarding the Pacific way of life was what more than 500 young individuals did during the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) in Hawaii earlier this month. The youths that represent 27 countries from around the Pacific responded to the call to action by their elders to lead their nations forward in the face of looming challenges like climate change and the preservation of their culture. What caught my attention during the opening of FestPAC was the presence of many young people from the island of Kiribati.

Looking like pupils at first glance, they quickly startled everyone with their spectacular performance during the Parade of Nations. Consisting of 78 members, the Kiribati delegation’s presence was electrifying displaying their traditional dance with exceptional expression and movement. The rhythmic beautiful ensemble movement of their feet, hands and whole body imitates the movement of the frigate birds as it soars, and the well-designed costumes made from local materials signified deep-rooted culture that has been passed down for many generations.



University of Hawaii student Ulamila Caginavanua said youths have played a huge role in putting together the FestPAC in Hawaii.
