We are indeed witnessing very sad times for the US and the world as a whole. The Trump saga will inevitably result in a shameful legacy. Not because Trump was convicted, but because a convicted criminal can still run for, and possibly win the presidency of the United States of America, the so-called beacon of world democracy.

The irony is that on the one hand, the convictions appear to demonstrate that no one is above the law, but on the other, that interpretation or manipulation of laws can still allow a convicted felon to be elected to the highest office in the land. Surely, this will send contemptible and dangerous messages to present and future world leaders who have a corrupt and lawless bent. Shameless and blameless Donald will have no credibility as leader of the free world on the global stage. I can’t foresee Trump being accorded respect or trust from other world leaders. The likes of Anthony Albanese and the UK prime minister (Sunak or Starmer) will have prohibitive reservations, even contempt, about this crimina.
