Welsh rugby player honoured There were moving scenes at a Welsh rugby club on Wednesday night as more than 100 people turned up to honour a hugely popular player who collapsed and died in training on Tuesday. The big crowd gathered to pay tribute to Lee Southall, 36, fondly known as the “people’s captain” at Hollybush RFC near Blackwood.

Mr Southall died during a game of tag rugby at the club. More than 100 members of the club, including Lee’s family, gathered on the field on Wednesday evening shortly after 6pm for a group huddle and moment of reflection amid huge emotion. Flowers were laid between the posts at one end of the pitch with many accompanied by notes, Hollybush RFC jerseys, and cans of Lee’s favourite cider. One of the notes read: “Well Southy, I never in a million years thought I’d be writing this.

You’re going to be missed so much by our rugby family. Your presence filled the room like no other.” Club captain Tom Hancock said Lee was a “lovely character” who would “light up a room and light up a rugby field”.
