Taking care of your curly or coily (afro) hair doesn’t have to feel like a huge faff if you know what not to do. Hair expert Jennie Roberts, who runs the Jennie Roberts Hair Academy in Fulham , London, has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to keeping curls and coils looking and feeling fabulous. After starting out at a local salon in Manchester , she trained at the world renowned Vidal Sassoon academy in London.

Once she left, Jennie found her next challenge working with the owner of a modelling agency on studio photoshoots. In the ‘90s, after being spotted working on models at London Fashion Week, she was asked to assist the Spice Girls, which included tending to Mel B (aka, Scary Spice) and her iconic curls, as well as the other group members. co.uk, Jennie has shared three of the most common mistakes she sees when it comes to styling and maintaining this type of hair. The first is not learning about what your hair actually needs.

‘I see people jumping on products they’ve seen on TikTok instead of learning the texture of their hair, like curly or loose waves, or coils and how they want to style it. ‘This leads to using the wrong products and not using products the right way,’ she says. Overusing products like conditioners, shampoos, and hair masks, is another faux pas we’re all guilty of doing.
