Legendary Hollywood actress Shelly Duvall has died aged 75 following complications of diabetes. The star was best known for her performance alongside Jack Nicholson in The Shining. confirmed Shelly's passing, with a statement from her partner of 35 years, Dan Gilroy, which read: "My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us.

Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley." The actress won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her performance in directed by her mentor Robert Altman.



This led to her casting in Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film, based on Stephen King's novel. She also starred in films such as and , and she famously played Olive Oyl alongside Robin Williams' Popeye in a live-action film in 1980. In 2002, Shelley announced she would be stepping away from the spotlight and retiring from acting after appearing in the film, In an interview with , Shelley said she left show business because people in Hollywood "hurt" her.

"I was a star; I had leading roles," she told them. "People think it's just aging, but it's not. It's violence.

" In 2016, she appeared on an episode of Dr Phil, where she spoke about dealing with mental illness. In 2023, however, she made her return to the screen in the film with director Scott Goldberg telling , "Shelley leaves behind an amazing legacy and will be missed by so many people, myself included. I am proud of her for overcoming adversity to act again and will always be forever grate.
