Spending in haste has caused Birmingham City to repent at leisure in recent years. One splurge in 2017 forced the sale of St Andrew’s and hit the club with a deduction of nine points. Another in 2020 caused a ripple effect that has only this month been worked through the system with the departure of the likes of Neil Etheridge and Scott Hogan.

It will be interesting to see if last summer's transfer speculation pays long term dividends having so far reaped nothing more than a relegation. Lengthy contracts were handed to Tyler Roberts, Dion Sanderson and Lee Buchanan, with the likes of Siriki Dembele and Ethan Laird penning three year deals. In the last few years, though, Blues have at least created assets, turning profits on the likes of Tahith Chong, adding value to the likes of Juninho Bacuna and harnessing the loan market to reasonably good effect.



That said the deals that brought Emanuel Aiwu and Oliver Burke to Blues looked shaky from the outset. But it wasn’t always thus – for all their whiffs, Blues have hit some home runs over the last 30 years and Brian Dick has picked his five best. Let us know if you agree.
