With the summer holidays rapidly approaching, many people will be looking for fun days out to spend with the kids - however the costs can sometimes add up. Luckily, there's one major attraction just a five minute walk from Cambridge railway station that has free entry for kids. Cambridge University Botanic Gardens is one of the most famous botanic gardens in the UK.

A highlight of any day out in the city, the gardens showcase plants from around the world from the fenlands of Cambridgeshire to New Zealand - with a collection of more than 8,000 plant species. But this place is so much more than just plants. Having first opened in 1762, it's seen some world famous people walk through its paths and admire its plants, including one of the greatest scientists of all time: Charles Darwin.

The scientist who discovered the Theory of Evolution, studied botany in the gardens when he was a student in the University, before he ever travelled to the Galapagos Islands. But the gardens have changed a lot since the Victorian age. With the addition of some of its most beautiful parts including the impressive fountain and Limestone Rock Garden that were both built no more than 50 years ago, the Botanic Gardens is a marvel for the senses - not only eyes but smell too with all the blooming flowers this summer! There is lots to keep the kids entertained too.

Running from.
