I don't know about you, but I just can't be in my living room all day. Any time I try to be productive, it just doesn't work. Sometimes, I work on stories remotely, and the color of my apartment walls is that of writer's block.
On other days, my goal is just to read a few chapters of a book. I'll get sucked into a few pages. Flip, flip, flip, they go.
Then suddenly, I'm sunk into the couch cushions. Before I know it, my phone is in my hands, scrolling. By the end of the hour, I'm flipping through YouTube montages of people making bad driving mistakes, which certainly isn't as fulfilling as my pile of unread Toni Morrison books.
My brain aches. Getting out to a new environment works wonders. The benches on the riverfront trail in Davenport are a favorite reading spot of mine.
But unfortunately — get to work, AI! — park benches don't have WiFi yet, so that rules out remote work. The local coffee shop scene is, thankfully, delightful. I've written about Coffee House in the East Village of Davenport, where my regular order is probably scrawled somewhere behind the espresso maker.
I also love the view from a window seat at Milltown in East Moline, or the lines of books in library-style cafes Brewed Book in Davenport and The Atlas Collective in Moline. Thanks to a few interviews for stories, I've recently been introduced to Theo's Java Cafe in Rock Island. I'm adding it to the list of great Quad-Cities spots to get away from all the noise.
