The summer is on its way and with it comes the warmer weather, sunshine and fun days away with the family and friends. Escaping to the coast to while away the afternoon with ice cream and fish and chips and long walks (and the occasional paddle for the braver among us) is one of the best parts of this time of year. In , we are spoiled for choice with to go to, with the Ayrshire coast not too far away and other lesser-known gems to enjoy nearby.

With that in mind, here are some of the best beaches to enjoy that are easily accessible from Glasgow. Seamill beach lies just north of the better-known one at Ardrossan, stretching along the coast at West Kilbride and offering plenty of options for dining with both the Waterside and Seamill Hydro hotels nearby. Ideal for walking your favourite pooch or tiring out the kids with the numerous rock pools you'll find (just remember to take some buckets to keep your catches in) it's ideal for whiling away a memorable afternoon with the family.



With stunning views and even better sunsets, you won't regret going a little further. One of the cleanest and most family-friendly beaches around, Troon is a pretty big sandy beach with plenty of amenities, amusements and most importantly parking. Ideal for dogs and kids, there is plenty of space and the sea is easily accessible meaning paddling becomes a fun option on warmer days too.

Particularly popular with Glaswegians, a trip 'doon the watter' to Saltcoats is one that many of the city's families .
