The City of Brockton unveiled a $150,000 statue of former middleweight boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler on Thursday in a park named after him, city officials said. “Brockton is known worldwide as the ‘City of Champions,’ largely because of the incredible and historic athletic achievements of Marvelous Marvin Hagler,” said Brockton Mayor Robert F. Sullivan in a statement this week.
“Marvelous Marvin was a global boxing icon who embodied all the best attributes of our great city: toughness, perseverance, community and dedication. This statute will stand as a symbol of his spirit for generations, and inspire people to always strive to be the best that they can be.” Hagler died “unexpectedly” in March of 2022 at 66 in his home in Bartlett, N.
H., the statement said. Under a sunny sky, officials along with Hagler’s widow, Kay Hagler, pulled back a white tarp to reveal a bronze statue of the legendary boxer equipped with red gloves.
The crowd at the event included boxing and sports broadcasting veterans, elected officials, Hagler’s family members and friends, and community members, the City of Brockton said in a Facebook post Thursday.
