STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As a part of continuous efforts to beautify and reinforce the safety of the neighborhood, the Forest Regional Residential Civic Association (FRRCA) has helped renovate a bustling West Brighton intersection.
After increasing concerns about pedestrian safety at the intersection of Forest and Bard Avenues, the FRRCA connected with the city Department of Transportation (DOT) to evaluate the intersection and make it safer for pedestrians. To address the association’s concerns, DOT widened the intersection to better allow pedestrians to cross the street. “[The DOT] painted the street to make it look like the sidewalk is bigger,” Neil Anastasio, FRRCA president, explained.
“Therefore, it shortens the intersection for the people to walk through.” A spokesperson from the DOT elaborated on the street modification. “These curb extensions will help calm traffic and reduce the time it takes for pedestrians to cross the street,” the spokesperson said.
The DOT provided two colorful concrete blocks to bring more visibility to the intersection. Anastasio explained that the FRRCA wanted to do more to not only make the intersection safer, but to beautify the area. The Forest Regional Residential Civic Association and New York Department of Transportation added plants and other safety features to the Forest Avenue and Bard Avenue intersection in West Brighton.
