THE excitement is building in Kildare as the renowned Rás Tailteann, Ireland’s premier international cycling race, returns to the county for the first time since 2013. Stage 4 of the race will culminate in Kildare Town next Saturday, 25 May, bringing elite cyclists from around the world to the finish on Bride Street. The 2024 Rás Tailteann kicks off on (today) Wednesday in Tullamore, spanning a challenging 784.
8 km over five stages, and concludes in Bective, County Meath, on Sunday. This year’s route promises intense competition and showcases the beauty and diversity of Irish roads. Kildare holds a significant place in the history of the Rás Tailteann.
Paddy Flanagan, hailing from just outside Kildare Town, etched his name into the race’s legacy with three overall victories and a remarkable 11 stage wins. To honour this connection, former Rás Stage Winner, Liam Baxter, will be specially recognised during the event on Saturday. Local Councillor Suzanne Doyle, along with the dedicated efforts of the local cycling clubs in Kildare, has been instrumental in organizing this prestigious stage finish.
Their hard work ensures a memorable day for both participants and spectators, highlighting the community’s passion for cycling and commitment to supporting major sporting events.
