Inclement weather didn’t dampen spirits at this year’s Surrey Access Walk & Roll event. Held Tuesday (May 28) at Crescent Beach, the event – an initiative of the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo – was part of efforts to celebrate National Accessibility Week. Marking its third return to the South Surrey waterfront, it drew self advocates, advocates, youth, politicians and more out for a group warmup followed by a walk or roll along the promenade.
A $500 grant from SPARC enabled SAS to provide snacks for participants, as well as music to further boost the crowd’s already-positive vibe. “Construction workers along the waterfront stopped what they were doing on a roof to be able to share in the dancing and enjoying the event as people walked by,” noted Jillian Glennie, director of development for The Semiahmoo Foundation. A post to the Reconnection Youth Services at Alex House Facebook page, describes the event as “shining a spotlight on National Accessibility week, celebrating people with disabilities and thinking of the ways we can be a more inclusive and accessible community.
” SAS members strive to make change through positive relationships. Over the years, their efforts have included sharing public-service messages, fundraising for accessibility and working to ensure the voices of those who have trouble speaking up – or simply can’t – are heard. Another of the group’s fundraisers is coming up later in June – the New to You Clothing Sale.
