NORTH ANDOVER — Friday morning marked the beginning of the most anticipated day of the year for Special Olympians from Andover and North Andover. The event at North Andover High School attracted a massive crowd filled with athletes, parents, teachers, and supporters. Nearly 200 athletes from 13 schools participated in this year's games with participants ranging from preschool age to adulthood.
The games began with a parade of athletes led by the North Andover Police Department as they walked along the school’s track to a chorus of cheers from spectators. Special Olympian and former North Andover High School student James Day Keith gave a speech to attendees about the importance of believing in themselves. “Remember guys, be your own self advocate and you can do anything,” Keith said.
Davis Randall, a former North Andover High School student then enthusiastically delivered the athletes oath for the Special Olympics: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." With those motivating words, the games began and groups of athletes moved to their first event of the day. The excitement was palpable as athletes competed in events like the 50 yard dash and standing long jump.
Jaden Elsio Julia, a member of the Transition Opportunities Program program, shared his thoughts on the games offered. “I love doing all the activities,” Elsio Julia said. While the activities are beloved amongst athletes, many spoke about how the event also helps them connect .
