Delaware County’s lacrosse teams are on another remarkable run, with Archbishop Carroll girls, Marple Newtown boys, and both Radnor boys and girls reaching the PIAA championships Saturday. This is a testament to the strength of lacrosse in Delco, which has been the case for decades now. Archbishop Carroll will clash with Twin Valley for the Class 2A title at 10 a.
m. It’s a familiar matchup, being their third consecutive battle in the state final. Carroll is on the brink of making history with a potential fourth straight championship – a PIAA record.
Later, at 2:30, the Class 3A girls final will see Radnor facing off against their Central League rival, Conestoga. Radnor bested ‘Stoga for the District 1 title last month. Marple Newtown’s boys will battle Mars, the District 7 champion and the only western Pennsylvania team to make it to the finals, at noon in the Class 2A boys title game.
Finally, the Radnor boys are poised to make history in the Class 3A final against La Salle at 4:30, aiming for their fourth consecutive PIAA trophy. It’s a shame that many followers of Delco’s four state finalists are going to miss all of the fun. All four excellent matchups will unfold at Penn State University’s Panzer Stadium.
In July 2022, the PIAA committed to hosting the lacrosse championships at Penn State for four years, through 2026. There’s no denying that playing at the home of the Nittany Lions is an exciting experience for the athletes, especially the seniors, many.
