Stagecrafters Youth Theatre is gearing up to present “Shrek the Musical Jr.” at the Baldwin Theatre in downtown Royal Oak from July 19-28. “Shrek the Musical Jr.

” is based on the DreamWorks Animation film and the book by William Steig. It tells the tale of an unlikely hero, Shrek, an ogre who’s a bit grumpy, but lovable. He finds himself on the unlikely mission of rescuing Princess Fiona, and themes of friendship, bravery and self-acceptance abound.



Emily Lourim, 24, of Madison Heights is directing the production. “I was interested in directing ‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’ because I have been in ‘Shrek’ twice and it seems to pop up in my life at very key times and has created so many core memories,” she said.

“The first time I did ‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’ was here at Stagecrafters 10 years ago as a child. When I was in the show then, I was surrounded by so many adults who were such great mentors and have now turned into some of my greatest friends.

” She adds: “It’s such an honor to be back directing the show with so many young people in the cast and crew. I only hope to be as great of a mentor as the adults were to me in our production ten years ago.” The show will delight people of all ages, she said.

“This story resonates with both kids and adults because of the message that no matter who you are, we are all important, beautiful and shine in our own light,” Lourim said. “The humor in ‘Shrek’ resonates with kids and adults alike and I .
