Willy Russell’s one-woman show, Shirley Valentine, comes home to the Liverpool Everyman as part of the theatre’s 60th birthday celebrations. It was originally commissioned and staged by the Everyman and the role of Shirley will be played by Liverpool’s very own, fabulous, Helen Carter. Stephen Fletcher is directing it.

I was delighted the other day to sit down with Mark Da Vanzo, who is the CEO for the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres. We had a long chat for my podcast about the two theatres, and their birthday celebrations. New Zealand-born Mark has trained in theatre and covered every base from acting to directing to now a creative leadership role.



His journey since leaving New Zealand has been brilliant, finishing up in Liverpool. I am excited Shirley Valentine is coming back to our city. It's a wonderful piece of theatre and Helen is perfect for the role of Shirley, she’s just wowed audiences at the National Theatre in London, in Boys from the Blackstuff.

I first met director, Stephen Fletcher, when he played the Prince in Cinderella in 2008, with Cilla Black. He’s a very talented actor, with the most beautiful singing voice. Now he is making a name for himself directing.

Talking to Mark, CEO, they have got some great plans for both theatres in the future. The 2014 new build of the Everyman is stunning and a beautiful design, it feels so solid. It’s a vibrant culture hub in Hope Street.
