Lucknow: As part of plan to rejuvenate Kukrail river, Lucknow Development Authority has proposed to govt to revive the 28km-long river by feeding water from the Sharda Canal . This will help in reviving the water bodies linked to Kukrail river and also recharge groundwater along its banks. The proposal was presented by LDA vice-chairperson Indramani Tripathi before the urban development department in a recent meeting.

The presentation was based on the recommendations of Prof Venkatesh Dutta, environmental science department at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, who is adviser to govt for revival of Kukrail river. “The Reuwa nullah that merges with the river near Kukrail forest is fed by the Chinhat distributary and Sonada and Manpur minor branches of Sharda Canal. This route can be used to rejuvenate Kukrail with the help of Sharda Canal by diverting its water after irrigation needs are met,” Dutta said.

Besides, the proposal states that all 27 ponds and three lakes within 8km distance from the origin of Kukrail river in Asti village in Bakshi Ka Talab till Kukrail forest need to be revived. These water bodies should be notified to the District Wetland Authority for conservation. It will also help in persevering biodiversity, he added.

Dutta has suggested creating a natural green belt through landscaping instead of building concrete structures to help recharge groundwater on the river banks. “Desilting of Kukrail river should be done. Obstruction created by Kisan Pa.
