Jaipur: Pratapgarh district police on Thursday busted a gang involved in organising sham marriages and arrested three persons, including a mother and daughter from Bhopal. Police identified the accused as Seema alias Reena Singh (42), her daughter Neha Sharma (23) from Bhopal, and Bhaiyalal alias Jalam Singh Kalbeliya (50), also from Bhopal. According to superintendent of police Lakshman Das, a person named Sumit Rathore (28) reported on May 27 that he had married Neha Sharma through an organisation based in Indore.
After the marriage, Neha's mother, Seema, and uncle, Bhaiyalal, took Rs 1.20 lakh from him for Seema's treatment. Neha stayed with Sumit in Pratapgarh for four days.
Later, on April 4, Neha complained of a headache and asked to be taken to a hospital. While Sumit went to get medicine, Neha went to a nearby beauty parlour and later seized the opportunity to flee. A case was registered based on the report, and an investigation began.
Das said a campaign was being conducted to arrest wanted criminals. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to taking Rs 1.20 lakh from the victim under the pretence of marriage.
They revealed that they fraudulently arranged marriages through an organisation in Indore to extort money from people. The two female suspects were sent to jail, while the accused Bhaiyalal was remanded for further investigation. Police said the accused were duping people through sham weddings and fleeing with cash and jewellery.
