Imagine learning about the science of flight while standing next to a SPAD fighter biplane or F-16A Fighting Falcon? That’s the beauty of a new initiative at Selfridge Military Air Museum sparked by a $25,000 Ralph C. Wilson Trustee Program Grant and the visionary volunteer veterans who work behind the scenes at the museum including Executive Director Steven Mrozek, who received the award presented by Jeffrey Littmann, a trustee for the Wilson Foundation. “The field of aviation is well suited for the study of STEAM objectives.
” Mrozek, said in a news release. “This grant is a positive step in demonstrating the necessity of STEAM programs such as this.” The museum sits on grounds of Selfridge Air National Guard base in Harrison Township, which has a remarkable 106-year-history as one of the country’s oldest continually-operating military airfields.
This modern day base serves as the backdrop to the museum, and its exhibits, collection of aircraft and historical displays, and the unique opportunity it provides for interactive learning demonstrations. “Our focus will be primarily on aeronautical engineering and aviation technology, introducing students to the science of flight,” said Mrozek. “Developing an interest in STEAM based programs can open a broad array of outstanding career opportunities for our students.
The romance of flight, the rich history on display at the museum, and access to the crews and pilots that make it all happen, should ignite their cur.
