The Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) has partnered with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to bring together stakeholders in the crowdfunding space to deliberate on the ways and means of strengthening MSME financing and investment in our country. The event held at the SEC Lagos Zonal office, Victoria Island had in attendance key representatives from SEC, government officials, financial institutions, crowdfunding platforms, MSME owners, investors, regulatory bodies, academia, research institutions, and media professionals. Dr Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of SEC, while speaking at the event said that the commission has successfully registered three crowdfunding platforms, with three additional applications currently under review.

Agama, who was represented at the event by Abdulkadir Abbas, Director/Head of Department, Registration Exchanges Market Infrastructure and Innovation Department of SEC, said that the registered platforms have already begun to make significant contributions to the MSME financing landscape by facilitating the raising of funds for various projects. He said that the MSME operators have so far been able to source close to a billion naira through the crowdfunding framework within the short timeline and that this underscores the commitment of the Commission to fostering innovation and providing alternative financing options for MSMEs while ensuring regulatory compliance.
