Article content Local anglers now have the option of depositing used fishing lines into marked receptacles, with the hope of keeping Sault Ste. Marie’s famous waterways clean. The city announced Thursday that it has partnered with the Clear Your Gear initiative and Parks Canada to place these receptacles at popular fishing spots along the St.

Mary’s River. Once these used fishing lines are deposited, Parks Canada officials will go about removing hooks, leaders, weights and trash before sending the lines off to Clear your Gear for recycling. A city official told The Sault Star that Parks Canada installed a total of seven Clear Your Gear receptacles around the Sault Ste.



Marie Canal and Whitefish Island last week, with one additional collection box still on the way. The city financed this initiative through its Green Initiatives Fund and received the blessing of Batchewana First Nation to extend the project to Whitefish Island. This initiative also received the endorsement of local fishing guide Tyler Dunn, who provides his services across the St.

Mary’s River and the Algoma District more broadly. “By installing these fishing line receptacles, we can work together to reduce waste and protect our fish populations,” Dunn said in a Thursday news release from the city. “This project ensures that everyone can enjoy fishing responsibly, preserving our beautiful destination for future generations.
