Santa Ana hoisted the pride flag Wednesday afternoon at City Hall, an effort to show visible support for the LGBTQ+ community. The flag-raising coincided with Harvey Milk Day, celebrated on May 22 in recognition of the late human rights activist and one of the first openly gay elected officials as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. “The colorful rainbow flag sends a powerful message that our LGBTQ+ community members matter, they are supported and they belong in our beautiful city,” city officials said in a news release.

With a 2015 resolution requiring the rainbow-colored flag to be flown annually on Harvey Milk Day, Santa Ana was the first Orange County city to raise the pride flag . The flag will remain up through June, which is considered Pride month. City of Irvine officials held a similar event Wednesday evening.
