Sandstone Summer Theatre , a summer-only theater in Amherst for performers of all ages, will present “ Legally Blonde: The Musical ” July 11-13 at 7 p.m. each night at Avon High School Performing Arts Center, 37545 Detroit Road.
Director and vice president of the theater board Hannah Dougal said “Legally Blonde” was picked to be the adult show for this summer after she submitted it to the board as one of three options, based on her interest in directing. Though the musical is more “camp,” more exaggerated and amusing than the movie, it does have similar plot lines as it follows Elle Woods’ journey from sorority life to law school in an attempt to win her ex-boyfriend, Warner, back by attending the same school. “The musical does a great job of including specific movie references, but elevates the comedy, which often makes the musical more fun to watch,” said Dougal.
“Our production team decided to really lean into its ‘campy’ nature through the amazing choreography, creating a Barbie Dream House-inspired set design, and early 2000s inspired costumes.” The performance, rated PG-13, will also feature live dogs reenacting Elle’s dog Bruiser and Paulette’s dog Rufus, according to Dougal. Actors in the performance range in age, from high school and college-aged students to full-time employees in many professions, as well as experience with Sandstone Summer Theatre, whether it be 10 years or a few months.
“I think audiences will love ‘Legally Blonde.
