Brampton resident Mandeep (Raja) Singh Cheema died in a motorcycle accident in September 2012. His family is now honouring his love for riding with an annual fundraiser, dubbed Ride for Raja, that raises funds for bursaries and youth programs at Peel Children’s Aid Foundation. This year’s event takes place June 23 at Snelgrove Community Centre at in Brampton with registration beginning at 9 a.

m. and the scenic one-and-a-half-hour motorcycle ride beginning at 11 a.m.



“Our mission after losing Raja was to keep his beautiful memory alive and to support youth in their education,” event founder and Cheema’s sister, Navdeep Gill, said in an email. “We want to help build bright futures ..

. We hope to achieve a big milestone of $100,000 this year alone — in honour of what would have been Raja’s 50th birthday.” The event also features a raffle for a 2024 Harley Davidson Softail Standard.

Ride for Raja is a partnership between the Mandeep Singh Cheema Charitable Foundation (MSCCF) and Peel CAF, which was founded in 2003 with the aim of supporting “innovative and urgently needed programs and services” for children, youth and families. “In Ontario, 46 per cent of kids in care graduate from high school compared with 83 per cent of their peers. Among those who do graduate, enrolment in post-secondary education is 66 per cent less than that of the general population,” Maryann Kerr, CEO of Peel CAF, said in a statement.
