New musicals come and new musicals go but I have a feeling that Burlesque is destined to become a smash hit that will be staged again and again over many years. Turning movies into stage musicals is now an everyday occurrence but they are usually based on beloved classics that are at least two decades old such as Sister Act, Legally Blonde or Pretty Woman. Burlesque was released in 2010 and despite having a cast led by superstars Cher and Christina Aguilera, it garnered mixed reviews and was only a modest success at best while its reputation has hardly been enhanced by the passage of time with even Cher herself admitting ‘it was not a good movie’.
