DOUGLAS − One year after arson destroyed two historic churches, cleanup efforts on one of the churches has begun and renovation efforts are about to get underway for both. A large crane was in Douglas on Thursday, June 6 working with crews from Bleuwave Contractors of Chandler to remove the charred ceiling beams from the First Presbyterian Church on 10th Street. According to Susan Kramer, Ruling Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, parts of the church beginning with the exterior walls as well as the chimney remain intact and are salvageable while other areas are not.

Kramer said some of the rooms in another section of the church that were not damaged in the fire are currently being converted into a pastor’s study and a room where congregants will begin having worship services. For the past two weeks church members have been busy painting moving items in and out of the rooms that are about to be occupied. “We are very appreciative that the Catholic Diocese let us use their (Sacred Heart) church in Pirtleville, but we want to come back to familiar surroundings,” Kramer said.

“We want to be in our home. We have been cleaning out the cabinets in the Fellowship Hall trying to see what we could salvage and what was destroyed beyond making it salvageable.” Garcia Construction of Douglas has been working with the church to get electricity restored to the rooms the congregants will meet hopefully starting this week.

They are also going to be involved in the renovation w.
