Freud's Last Session is released in UK cinemas on 14 June and imagines meetings between the father of psychoanalysis and author C.S. Lewis at the Hampstead home where Freud spent the last year of his life.
A perfect recreation of the famous couch was made for the film from the original in Freud's former study at the museum. Set designers recreated Freud's study in Maresfield Gardens for the film shoot of Freud's Last Session in Dublin (Image: Patrick Redmond) Freud moved to Maresfield Gardens after escaping Nazi-occupied Austria on the eve of the Second World War. A full replica was recreated for the shoot in Dublin with Matthew Goode playing The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe author, and Liv Lisa Fries Freud's analyst daughter Anna.
The film interweaves past, present and fantasy as Freud and CS Lewis challenge each other over science, religion, faith and the existence of God as well as exploring Freud’s relationship with Anna. On display at The Freud Museum are ten hand-drawn set designs for the film - including pencil sketches for Freud's study - by designer Luciana Arrighi, who won the Oscar for her work on Howards End.
