As fans across the world watched the squad attempt to win the UEFA European Championship for the first time, the team lost out on lifting the trophy following a 2-1 defeat by Spain. Among those in the crowd were the Prince of Wales, who is president of the FA, as well as his son Prince George .

Following the match, Prince William showed his support for the squad as he shared a heartfelt message on social media. Posting on the official Instagram account for the Prince and Princess of Wales, an Instagram Story read: "This time it just wasn't meant to be. We're all still so proud of you.



Onwards @england. W." Meanwhile, last week King Charles also shared his support for the team as they headed into the final stage of the tournament .

“My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.

A. European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match,” the message read. “If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective hea.
