SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — The “world’s largest rainbow flag” will return to San Francisco Friday as the Pride laser will be illuminated along Market Street. The 4.1-mile long laser rainbow flag will run the length of Market for Pride weekend from Friday through Sunday.
The Pride laser lighting on Friday is also the kickoff of Illuminate’s “Summer of Awe.” Illuminate, the arts nonprofit behind the Bay Bridge lights, will be planning a number of laser activations across San Francisco throughout the summer. “Illuminate is creating and cultivating an entirely new art form with these laser installations,” said Illuminate CEO Ben Davis.
“Each Summer of Awe installation is a unique and unprecedented exploration of beauty and awe. Each is free to experience. We expect to reach millions of Bay Area residents and visitors.
” The Summer of Awe begins Friday with the return of the Pride Flag which Illuminate says “has mesmerized viewers for the past two summers using six laser cannons.” This year, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of same-sex marriage in SF, Illuminate will deploy 20 laser cannons in partnership with NuSalt Laser International. For Friday night’s lighting of the lasers, Illuminate will host a grand-lighting ceremony in front of the Ferry Building.
There will be live music, DJs, appearances from Dykes on Bikes, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and veteran activist Cleve Jones. There will also be a renewal of vows for two same-sex married.
