Whisper it quietly, but football could be coming home tonight. With Gareth Southgate's England team facing their second successive European Championships final, there's a wave of optimism among football fans. And when something's this popular, expect to see MPs get involved too.

Social media will doubtless be filled with politicians sharing pictures of themselves watching the game, and maybe some hot takes on key action points. But while tapping into our love for the Beautiful Game should be easy win, it hasn't always gone well. From David Cameron, Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson and John Prescott, history is littered with politicians who got it wrong.

Here are some of our favourites. A very early General Election gaffe came when the (now former) Prime Minister visited a Welsh brewery soon after calling the surprise poll. While trying to make small talk in Barry, he asked staf if they were looking forward to "all the football".

But one worker responded quickly pointing out that Wales had not qualified for the Euro 2024 tournament. He made the comment after a different worker said the summer of football was "not so much my bag". Mr Sunak awkwardly laughed, as he scrambled to say: "It'll get people out.

There will be people coming. It'll be a good summer of sport." Perhaps the most famous example is former Etonian David Cameron .

While he was Prime Minister he had an embarrassing lapse of concentration and urged people to back West Ham - despite being an Aston Villa fan. In the midd.
