STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Eight Park Hill youth soccer players become two-time New York City Soccer Initiative Community Cup champions, bringing home a victory for the second year in a row.
The team went head-to-head with Mott Haven’s team, which won in 2022. During the intense game, both teams put up a great fight with a tied score of 0-0 until Park Hill earned the cup by scoring during a penalty shootout, making the match’s final score 1-0. “The ability for the students to be able to participate in a program like this, and to be able to have back-to-back wins has been a real source of pride and honor for them,” Heather Butts, NYCFC Staten Island director and Park Hill coach, said.
On Sunday, June 9, 30 youth soccer teams from across the five boroughs gathered at the Triborough Bridge Playground in Astoria for the third annual citywide tournament. Soccer players ages 8 to 11 are brought together to compete, each proudly representing their neighborhoods. “Bringing together 30 neighborhoods to compete in this tournament gives kids an opportunity to be really proud of where they are from,” NYCFC Senior Manager of Community Development Bailee Eaglin said.
