The Peak District's Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park have been recognised as one of the world's best days out, according to TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards for 2024. The accolade places it in the top 10% of listings worldwide on the travel guidance platform. The caverns, etched with millions of years of history, offer visitors a chance to explore vast limestone chambers adorned with crystal stalactites.

A spokesperson for the cavern revealed that it has been attracting adventurers since the 1500s, including Mary Stuart, better known as Mary Queen of Scots, who reportedly visited in 1582. In 1681, writer Charles Cotton listed the cave among his seven 'Wonders of the Peak', bringing newfound fame to the cavern. The TripAdvisor award is based on genuine feedback from community members who have visited and left an authentic review in the past year.

Visitors can expect a guided 45-minute tour through the underground passages during a typical visit to the cavern, which is open daily from 9.15am to 5pm. The experience can be rounded off with a visit to the on-site shop and cafe.

Poole's Cavern is just 44 miles from Nottingham and can be reached in around 80 minutes. Dave Green, CEO of Buxton Civic Association , expressed his gratitude: "Thank you to all our visitors and reviewers for their unwavering support and kind words. We are honoured to be included among travellers' favourites this year," reports Derbyshire Live .
