RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh artist remembers the century-old tree through art.

Tom McLaurin has taken photos of the oak tree over the years. He compiled those photos and used colored pencil composition to create art that shows off the tree’s web of roots. Living nearby, McLaurin knew the oak tree likely didn’t have much life left.

The City of Raleigh was forced to remove it because of a crack in its stump. It was also leaning. McLaurin said his art is a way for him to honor and remember the beautiful oak tree that stood for so long through sunny and stormy days.
