It triggered a desire to follow in his father's footsteps as a director, yet, Penn also showed promise in front of the camera. By age 19, Penn was one of the hottest properties in Hollywood in the 1980s. At one point in his career, the journeyman actor appeared in six films in two years.



Sadly, his life was cruelly cut short. The younger brother to A-lister Sean, Penn's acting career took off in the '80s. His big break came in 1984 when he was cast opposite Kevin Bacon in Footloose .

Film audiences lapped up Penn's comic ability to play the sidekick to Bacon's lead. Yet, perhaps the now classic dance practice scene was more true to life than Penn let on. "I'd never danced before," Penn said in a 1984 interview with the LA Times .

 Between 1983 and 1990, Penn was involved in 11 film and TV projects. In the space of two years, he appeared in six films. As he exited his teens, Penn's career success continued.
