Free pints of beer are up for grabs in Newcastle and the wider region next week to those who can prove their football knowledge by correctly answering one question. In the run-up to our big summer of sport, Greene King pubs are celebrating the season with a new brew called False Nine - named after a footie term which only those in the know will recognise. And it's that kind of football knowledge that is being called for in order to qualify for a free pint.

The pub chain, whose local branches include Junction and Crow's Nest in Newcastle and The County in Jesmond, will be giving out a complimentary pint of its new golden ale on Wednesday, May 29 to football fans who can name a false nine player. Greene King Brewery came up with the idea after carrying out a nationwide survey of 2,000 adults to find out just how much Brits really know about the beautiful game. It also found that more than 20m Brits did not know the offside rule and almost three-quarters - 74% - had never heard of a false nine. The false nine position refers to a striker who operates in a deeper role than usual, linking the play with the midfield to the wide areas or helping the team pro.
