Canada Day is a special holiday to Kristine Kohaly for two reasons. For one, the St. Catharines resident is a proud Canadian.

It’s also her daughter’s birthday, who was born on Canada’s 100th birthday 57 years ago. “I love Canada,” said Kohaly, while visiting Lakeside Park Monday. “I used to sell wholesale back in the day and I travelled all over Canada.

I drove everywhere, to trade shows across the country — I love it. It’s a beautiful country.” St.

Catharines had two days of activities at Lakeside Park Sunday and Monday. During the day in Welland, visitors enjoyed arts and culture activities, a sports hub, kids’ zone, interactive experience areas, local vendors and food trucks at Merritt Park. Five-year-old Colton Carbone took a particular liking to the bouncy castle.

Marc Hansen, who’s originally from Welland, but now lives in Ireland with his wife, Catherine Burke, and daughter, Mary Jane, took in Monday’s Canada Day festivities at Firemen’s Park in Niagara Falls. “We’re just here visiting family. We’re here for Canada Day and wanted to take (Mary Jane) somewhere and we looked at what was available in Welland and then we looked at the Falls and (across) the Niagara region and we saw that there was so much more going on here (in Niagara Falls),” said Hansen.

Catherine, who’s from Ireland, said she’s been to Canada for a couple of Canada Day celebrations before, adding she likes how many of the festivities are geared toward families. .
