A second-hand bookshop in a truly unique location has opened near earlier this month. will be able to enjoy the new bookshop in an ancient setting. English Heritage, who manage the abbey, are asking generous visitors to donate books they don't want anymore for the shop.

A perfect place for bargain hunters, books at the abbey may cost as little as 50p. Cleeve Abbey Manager Teresa Pratt said: “This is a wonderful addition to our offering at Cleeve Abbey and one that our sustainability-minded and book-loving visitors will hopefully appreciate. On your next visit, why not pick up a book to enjoy with a picnic in our beautiful grounds?” Cleve Abbey is 826-years-old and home to a dramatic history: It was a monastery for centuries before being closed by Henry VIII in the 1530s.



Of the sixteen monks who lost their home, one later became the martyr John Hooper, who was burnt for his Protestant beliefs by Henry VIII's daughter Mary I in 1555. Despite being suppressed during the reformation, much of the abbey survives to this day. Visitors can still see the cloister, refectory, chapter house, and the 15th century painted chamber.

Cleeve Abbey is open seven days a week from 10am-5pm. Entry is free for English Heritage members, whereas tickets for non-members vary depending on age and which day you visit. Visitors can save money by.
