Neptune, planet of dreams, drugs, vision, and oblivion, is going retrograde this summer. The mystical planet will slow its roll from July 2 until December 7. Neptune is the planet of fantasy and avoidance, and when it goes retrograde, we’re given a cold, hard wake-up call.

The rose-colored glasses are crushed, the feather pillow is unceremoniously ripped out from beneath our slumbering skulls, and the bed is set on fire. But it ain’t all bad, I promise. What happens when Neptune is retrograde? Retrograde is a bit of a misnomer, as a planet never moves backward in the sky — it only appears to do so from our vantage here on Earth.



In this way, a retrograde is made to challenge our perceptions; and in the case of Neptune, upend our illusions. In the whimsical sign of Pisces, Neptune retrograde wakes us up to what we have been trying to ignore and the harmful programming we have come to accept. Lifting the proverbial veil to show us that an ugly truth bests a beautiful lie.
