Our country and the world as a whole are going through a rough time. Men who want more power and more money will do or say anything to get it! I hate to turn on the TV or pick up a newspaper or magazine. Victoria Wienke, of Hamburg, knows where to get away from it all.

But at this time of year, I have a refuge. Every morning, I go outside and enter my own little world as I water my garden and watch how God has made things spring up or grow taller overnight. It’s a very peaceful place with no interruptions except for the occasional bee or butterfly trying to land on the next flower before I get there with the water.

The raised beds with our favorite vegetables get my first attention and initially I couldn’t wait for things to grow a bit more, then blossom, but now I hurry outside every day, anxious to see what can be harvested. We have had scallions, radishes, lettuce, peppers and zucchini. Somehow those salads taste so much better when we grow the vegetables ourselves.

And those first fried zucchini tasted soooo good! Of course I know the time will come when we will say, oh no — not another zucchini. But that time hasn’t come yet. Now it’s time for the cucumber vines covered in blossoms to finally yield cucumbers.

And those tomato plants that my husband diligently planted and carefully pruned are full of green tomatoes but, as yet, no red ones! I have already started freezing the spinach and the green peppers and tomatoes are next. That way, we can enjoy the fruits .
