Message from Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo
I extend warmest greetings to the government and people of the Italian Republic on the 78th founding anniversary. The Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs joins the Italian government and people in celebrating this auspicious day. The Philippines and Italy share a deep bond, founded on mutual respect, shared values and a commitment to the international rules-based order. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo The connections of both nations are further seen in robust trade and investment exchanges, which the department views as vital elements of Italy and the Philippines' bilateral relations. The Philippines is optimistic about expanding these areas even further.Overall, Italy ranks as the fourth largest trading partner of the Philippines in the European Union with more than 500 companies in the Philippines with Italian equity as well as a growing number of Filipino-owned companies in Italy. Successful engagements such as these continue apace, and as the Philippine economy moves from strength to strength, the country welcomes more Italian businesses to participate in the gains of its sound fiscal policy.Cultural exchanges are an especially fruitful part of Italy-Philippines relations, demonstrating deep connections between their peoples. Filipinos and Italians both share an innate love for and talent in visual and performing arts. Italy has served as a platform for Filipino artists to showcase their ability. Filipino artists, cultural groups and film workers participate in Italian events that have been exposing them to audiences and tastemakers from across the globe. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the Philippines' regular participation in the Venice Biennale, showcasing Filipino artists of cutting-edge vision in one of the world's preeminent cultural exhibitions. The Italian Embassy in Manila itself has been working hard to promote cultural awareness among young Filipinos with a series of activities under its festival, titled "The Embassy of Italy meets the Youth of Tondo." I personally witnessed one such event in March, the performance of Giacomo Puccini's opera, "Gianni Schicchi," at the San Pablo Apostol Parish in Tondo, Manila, arranged by the Embassy with the Manila Symphony Orchestra. The choice of venue underscores that, indeed, culture has no boundaries. For many Filipinos, Italy has become a second home. Italy has received Filipino people with open arms, and Filipinos have, in turn, contributed to the growth and development of the Italian economy and society. Nothing better symbolizes the deep friendship between the two countries than these diasporas, intermingling two cultures, highlighting common values and spirit of both Italy and the Philippines. To Italy, auguri (all the best)! Cheers to a nation that has enriched the world with its timeless beauty and indomitable spirit.Grazie mille, and mabuhay (A thousand thanks, and long live all)!
