WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT Not even bothering to stifle his yawns, the merciless killer listened impassively from jail as his motherless children poured out their pain in a downtown courtroom. Susan Chen was just 40, a mom of five and a dedicated registered nurse at SickKids, who was anally raped and left to bleed to death by husband Mansour Jalali in their Scarborough home. Following a judge-alone trial, he was convicted of manslaughter last year.
Court heard Chen’s suffering had begun long before. A victim of intimate partner violence, Chen had even made secret recordings of Jalali’s threats to beat and rape her and sent them to her mom for safekeeping. Yet she kept hoping he’d change.
But her daughter said he made their home a “House of Horrors.” “On April 3, 2019, my mom was cruelly taken from this world at the hands of the one who was supposed to love and protect her as a priority,” said the daughter, who was 18 at the time. “He knew where she laid, yet I was the one who made the call to 911 hours later.
I shouldn’t have had to see the horrible things he did; the blood in every corner. I shouldn’t have had to see her laying there, convincing myself she would wake up. I shouldn’t have had to beg the paramedics to keep trying.
” Chien-Ling Chen is haunted by what her daughter endured as she was left to die. “Lying there alone on that dirty floor in the bathroom ..
. how helpless she must have felt ..
. how much pain she must have been in,” she wrote..
