A multi-agency rescue was launched when a yacht burst into flames miles off the west Wales coast. An RNLI crew arrived on scene to find the vessel “almost totally destroyed” and its occupant “disappearing under the surface”. Emergency services including rescue helicopters were alerted to the incident shortly after 7pm on Saturday, May 25.
A member of the public raised the alarm after seeing smoke in the distance whilst in Stackpole, Pembrokeshire. An all-weather lifeboat from Tenby RNLI was launched and, as the crew rounded St Margaret’s Island, south of Tenby, they too spotted smoke on the horizon some 12 miles further south. When they got closer, they realised the yacht was on fire, reports WalesOnline .

A crew member immediately entered the water to keep the casualty afloat, whilst the remaining crew readied to bring him aboard. The man was brought onboard the Haydn Miller lifeboat and given casualty care.
