Lorain City Schools Superintendent Jeff Graham discussed during the Board of Education meeting the scuffle that took place after the Lorain High School graduation June 4 outside of Lake Erie Crushers Stadium. Graham said June 10 that he doesn’t want the altercation to ruin or diminish the accomplishments of the students who graduated that evening. He also celebrated the fact that Lorain High had its highest graduation rate in decades, although two in 10 did not meet graduation requirements.
The average graduation rate in the state of Ohio is 92 percent, and Ohio is ranked 23rd in the nation, Graham said. He said he expects that percentage to increase after a number of students complete summer school and credit recovery, which begins this week and runs through June. Those needing credit recovery were advised by school counselors, Graham said.
Lorain High graduated 432 students. The district also recognized 45 students, who not only graduated with a high school diploma but earned their associate degree. The commencement took place at Crusher Stadium because the regular site, George Daniel Stadium, is under construction.
Graham said the graduation was packed with students, family, friends and school staff and called the ceremony an amazing event. “There were amazing student speeches,” he said. “It was a gorgeous night, just an absolutely beautiful night.
“Unfortunately, and everybody’s read about it, at the end of the night about 45 minutes afterward, there were some.
