After maintaining a grade-point -average of over 4.0 in all four years, recent Lompoc High School graduate and first-generation student Alin Ramirez is headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this fall to pursue studies in architecture. "Since I was young, I’ve loved all forms of art, especially drawing.
I always knew I wanted a career in the arts," said the 18-year-old graduate, who accepted her diploma on June 7 . Ramirez credits her "really good math teachers" for encouraging her to mix math with art. "I found that architecture is also very artistic and that I can be very creative with it — along with the art and science," she said.
Looking back over her school career, Ramirez explained how as a first generation student she faced a number of challenges after arriving to the U.S. from Mexico at age seven.
Despite bumps in the road, the college-bound grad vows that "if you're enthusiastic and positive, you can get through anything."
