No one has seen or heard from Hermosa Beach resident Albert Calibet since June 11, when he went on a hike on the Greek island of Amorgos. The retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy is not a stranger to the island, according to his girlfriend, Debbie LeShane, who flew to Greece on June 14. She, along with Albert’s brother, Oliver Calibet, and others, have been searching for the 58-year-old ever since — but to no avail.
LeShane said by phone this week that people assisting in the search were set to depart on Friday, June 28, leaving her with little help aside from a friend who is joining her on Sunday. “My heart won’t let me leave,” LeShane said. Amorgos is a small island known for its hiking trails and an 11th century monastery, all surrounded by a beautiful blue sea.
The island is only accessible by ferry, with trips taking anywhere from 6 to 9 hours from Athens, depending on the type of vessel and weather conditions. Calibet, who had been in Greece since June 6, was reported missing by a local friend after he did now show up for lunch. The friend then contacted authorities.
“My understanding is some people did go out that afternoon,” LeShane said about the immediate search. The next day, on June 12, there was a helicopter search, she added. Two days later, on June 14, LeShane and Oliver Calibet flew to Greece to personally join the search.
They were joined by friends from Pamplona, Spain, and California, and the local friend who reported Albert Calibet m.
