He was a proud Navy Seabee, having served multiple tours in Vietnam, and could frequently be seen wearing his Seabee hat. After his Naval career, he joined the National Guard, and retired as a Master Sargent. Following his military career, he became a Boces carpentry teacher.
He spent his free time golfing, playing baseball/softball, rooting for the New York Yankees & UConn Huskies Women's Basketball team, and spending time with his beloved German Shepherds. The true love of Richard's life was his wife Joyce (Wortmann), with whom he celebrated 66 beautiful years of marriage, being the ultimate family man. They have 4 children: Linda (Don) Collins, Jean (Bob) Heikaus, Dennis (Valerie), and Patty (Dan) Derico, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
