I’ve written a lot about heroes. Many of the folks I have lauded have been heroes of my personal designation, but a few have been recognized universally. Struggling mightily to refrain from boasting about one’s own offspring, I must proclaim our son to have attained hero status to at least his family, friends, and one tiny calico kitten.

I can say that Roy Jr.’s informal training for hero status began long ago as a result of his love for animals and their well being. He has stopped (and stopped traffic) to save and relocate unfortunate and confused animals.



In fact, he and his mom were once threatened by an irate property owner when they pulled off the road to remove a box turtle from the highway. Even so, he could hardly believe his eyes when on a routine trip from Uniontown, stopped behind traffic at a light, he saw a tiny ball of fur scrambling back and forth beneath the car ahead of him. A passionate cat owner from a family of cat lovers, his heart nearly stopped when he recognized the grubby fur-ball as a kitten.

Confused and terrified, the tiny kitten scrambled toward the center of the road then reversed and ran toward the berm. Roy pulled off the road, getting a thumbs up from the driver behind him. At least off the road, the kitten hunkered along the curb.

After several short pursuits, the loudly protesting baby allowed herself to be captured. Thinking the rescue to be complete, the kitten calmed, and riding on the floor of his Corolla, our son continued toward .
